As many cities face the growing challenges of climate change, innovative solutions are needed to address the impact with urgency. Our city, Bratislava, is no exception, and this October we will host an event that will aim at solving these issues – Climathon 2024. 

Organized by Civitta in collaboration with the Bratislava City Hall and other partners, Climathon brings together diverse teams every year to generate ideas on how to mitigate and adapt to climate change here locally.

What is Climathon?

Climathon is a hackathon that encourages engaged individuals and teams to think creatively and develop solutions to a set of climate- and environment-related challenges defined by the city hall of Bratislava. Individuals and teams will compete for the best solutions for the pre-defined challenges and with the chance to win cash prizes. This year’s challenges include:

1. Data for people. How can we better communicate Bratislava research to people?
2. Second Chance. How can we give items a better second chance?
3. City services. How can we use data to improve city services?

This event is more than a competition – it is an opportunity to create real change. The best ideas will not only be awarded cash prizes but will also have the chance to be implemented, benefiting the city and its residents.

A call for corporate engagement

While Climathon generates great ideas, one of the key challenges that we have faced in previous years has been the difficulty to implement the ideas. Cities like ours often lack the capacity or resources to implement these new projects. This is where the private sector can make a significant difference.

We are reaching out to AmCham and BSCF members and their network to encourage participation in this year’s Climathon by offering the opportunity to "adopt" a project as part of your company’s ESG or CSR strategy. By supporting the implementation of a Climathon project, your organization can directly help to mitigate climate issues that impact Bratislava while showing commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.

How to get involved?

Climathon winning solutions are designed to be feasibile for implementation in Bratislava. However, the teams often need guidance and support through technical expertise to bring these project to life. Assistance of a project manager or team work to boost motivation can help to overcome barriers. While the solutions are feasible to be implemented, the team may significantly benefit with additional ownership that is necessary for their completion.  Join us to make these solutions a reality. We will prepare detailed packages of the solutions, and you can take charge of their implementation, ensuring their success and impact to the city.

Why get involved?

Many companies struggle to find meaningful local CSR projects that utilize the skills of their employees. While traditional activities like community beautification or volunteering are important, they often don’t use the professional expertise available among large corporate employers. On the other hand, Climathon projects are an excellent way to use the skills of project managers, IT developers, data analysts, engineers, and other professionals in creating a positive impact to our city.

By adopting a project, your company not only supports the city in its efforts to address climate-related issues, but also provides an engaging and meaningful activity for your teams.
