Are the emotions in the room with us? Yes, they are. In offices too.
Organizations do not suffer from people having human emotions. They suffer when people do not know what to do with them.
Emotions appear in conversations, deadlines, decisions,
misunderstandings and difficult situations. We cannot switch them off,
but we can learn how to work with them.
What emotional intelligence really means
Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize and understand our own emotions while also noticing and responding appropriately to the emotions of others.
It does not mean avoiding conflict, suppressing feelings or being endlessly nice. It means being able to respond rather than react. Honestly, clearly and respectfully, even when emotions run high.
Emotions are signals
Anger may tell us that a boundary has been crossed. Fear can lead to uncertainty or risk. Sadness can signal loss. The goal is not to eliminate these emotions, but to understand what they are telling us before they take over.
Where emotions are understood as information rather than obstacles, there is more room for trust, cooperation and thoughtful responses — and much less room for extremes.
This is why we shine light on the importance and complexity of emotional intelligence, and why we appeal to our clients to add this learnable skill to their Leadership mix.
What happens when emotional intelligence is missing
People stop asking questions because they fear ridicule, employees hide bad news because they expect anger. Feedback becomes personal, small misunderstandings grow into conflict and difficult topics are avoided until they become much bigger problems.
Over time, people start spending more energy protecting themselves than doing their best work.
Ultimately, emotional intelligence is not simply a “soft skill.” Technical expertise may help people solve complex problems, but emotional intelligence determines whether they can solve them together.
