Creating realistic deepfakes has become alarmingly easy and affordable, posing significant threats for all sectors, both private and public. In the financial industry, for example, deepfake technology can clone a person's voice using as little as 15 seconds of audio, undermining voice verification systems crucial for authentication and transactions. A recent example involves a multinational bank where a deepfake voice and video scam led to a fraudulent transfer of $25 million. The attackers used AI to mimic the voice and image of the bank’s CFO as well as other staff during a video call, convincing the bank’s clerk to approve the large transaction.

But deepfakes are certainly not limited to the financial sector. In the political arena, deepfakes pose a threat to the integrity of elections globally. A notable case is that of Svitlana Zalishchuk, a Ukrainian MP who faced a year-long social media disinformation campaign featuring falsified sexualized information and photographs after her pro-women's rights speech at the UN. A recent analysis of deepfakes revealed that 98% of all deepfake videos online are explicit. But explicit content isn’t the only threat. High-profile individuals involved in the democratic process, such as politicians and journalists, have become a target as a whole for deepfake videos intended to discredit them or harm their careers. Fabricated videos of their faces placed on existing videos to fabricate statements or actions that they never made are created to undermine their credibility and professional standing. In another example closer to home, during the parliamentary election in Slovakia, a deepfake video circulated through social media, which made it seem that one of the leaders of a candidate political party was conspiring with a journalist to manipulate the election results.

But celebrities, politicians, or company executives are not the only ones that can be targeted. Deepfakes provide a quick and simple way to attack, discredit, humiliate, and harm all individuals across various sectors, both in private and social standing. Addressing these issues openly and removing barriers of shame and stigma is crucial. Join us for an engaging event dedicated to understanding and navigating the challenges of deepfakes and disinformation. Let's work together to shape a safer, more inclusive digital future for everyone.
