Innovation in the Digital Age
The person who was originally meant to write this issue’s Letter to Members had to cancel at the very last moment due to unexpected circumstances. We did have an alternative lined up but in the end we decided to do this little experiment. Since this issue of Connection is dedicated to digital technologies and their impact on business and society, we decided to approach the most talked about AI chatbot of the past few months with the request to write this text. Two thirds of the worlds’ population – 5 billion of us – are connected via digital networks, influencing how we shop, work, live and play. From AI - to cloud - to quantum, data-led technologies power this digital connectivity, but it is trust that acts as an invisible, unifying force that enables the speed, innovation and choices that many of us take for granted.
Every company needs to ensure the security of its data and information systems. The company’s clients count on the confidentiality of the sensitive data, contracts and other information provided, whose disclosure could bring harm. Leakage of such data could be catastrophic in its consequences. An additional element that has appeared on the cybersecurity radar in recent years is artificial intelligence. Both cybercriminals and teams protecting organizations are using it more and more.
Accelerated by the recent crises – pandemic, energy, and war-related – many organizations brushed up their strategies and plans for digital transformation. To achieve positive return on investment, the boards opt for a “minimal” setup with cloud-based infrastructure and applications landscape. In their effort they often overlook that digitization of tools and processes with little or no insights into cybersecurity may seriously backfire and wipe out any benefits.
Cyber threats are continuously evolving: from ransomware attacks to data breaches, organizations are faced with immense threats and challenges. Modern cyber fusion centers can help by providing a single pane of glass, smart automation and rapid remediation.
Over the last three months, you couldn’t have avoided seeing some cryptic names, such as ChatGPT, and the resurrection of a once-archaic term: Artificial Intelligence (AI). ChatGPT belongs to a family of Large Language Models, which can, for instance, generate a poem, explain a complex program, or interact as a chat bot - all of this in plain English.

Organizations increasingly appreciate RPA’s ability to automate routine human tasks involving data processing. Slovak enterprises share this view.
The Medical Devices Regulation and the In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices Regulation, both of which were enacted in 2017, are currently regulating medical AI tools in the EU. Nevertheless, there have already been many non-binding strategic documents adopted by various EU organizations.
Digital innovations continue to transform organizations and entire industries and it is critically important to follow the latest developments and trends. We asked our members about the innovations they perceive as the most interesting within their sector. As AmCham’s membership covers a wide spectrum of industries, the answers offer an intriguing mosaic of innovative trends.

How do current technological breakthroughs impact our value systems and how can we channel them for human progress
Human fascination with creating human-like objects can be traced all the way to ancient Greece and Pygmalion, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and as technology and robotization developed, human-made human-like creatures came to embody our deepest fears of machines overtaking our world such as in the classic Terminator or the more nuanced horror movie M3gan, touching upon aspects of ethics and human-machine interaction. Today, it is hard to distinguish whether technological advancements are inspiring movies and fictional books, or the other way around.
